How it Works

Brief 

Establish a brief from the client. This informs the opportunities and constraints for the project. It will involve an initial conversation to understand your requirements and aspirations.

Survey 

For large and complicated projects it is prudent to appoint a professional survey. This will document services, structures, trees and topography for the site.

​

Sketch Proposals

Undertake and communicate the general ideas of the design and layout for the client’s approval.

This may require a site visit. Includes opportunity for client feedback and adjustments.

Deliverables include:

A Site Survey and Analysis plans, annotated sketch plan, planting and hard materials palette,

and image examples and may include an illustration or section.

Detailed Design

Once the Sketch Design has been approved, I will undertake preparation of the detailed plans

with the use of CAD software.

Deliverables include:

General Arrangement Plan – Layout of hard and soft landscape and garden features, boundaries

treatment to include levels and gradients.

Specification of materials used within the garden.

Planting Plan – Detailed layout of all the trees, shrubs, hedges, lawn and ornamental planting.

This will include a planting schedule.

If there are any bespoke elements detailed drawings of these will be prepared.

Tendering 

Tender Action – To prepare a list of contractors to be invited to tender and to issue the tender

documentation together with preparation of a tender report. To liaise with plant nurseries and

submit the planting schedules to gain an accurate price for the soft landscape items.

Construction (the Build)

Monitoring of the construction in accordance with the agreed plans.

The following services are possible to be charged on an hourly rate as per the clients requirements.

Hard Landscaping - Setting-out and commencement of works by appointed landscape contractor

(designer to be present). Project monitoring by designer as required by client.

Soft Landscaping - Planting will usually only start when all hard landscaping work is complete, to prevent damage to plants and lawns by machinery/works.

Snagging - On completion, all snagging must be attended to before the project can be signed

off as complete. A 5% retainer to the contractor is increasingly common, even on private projects.
